Movie: The Mummy Returns

Year of publication: 2000

Director: Stephen Sommers

Main cast: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Arnold Vosloo, John Hannah, The Rock, Oded Fehr, Freddie Boath...

Storyline: This sequel to the popular movie, "The Mummy", is once back again with Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his team. The Rock, of the World Wrestling Federation, makes an unexpected appearance as an ancient Egyptian king, who is the nemesis of the Imhotep (Arnold Voosloo). Now, Evelyn and Rick are married, and they have a young son, called Alex (Freddie Boath) Determined to stop the Scorpion King (The Rock), Imhotep, who has been resurrected, sets out to capture Alex because he has the bracelet of Anubis. This bracelet enables Imhotep to command the powerful army of Anubis in order to destroy the Scorpion King. Of course, the all-protective Rick would not let Imhotep touch even the smallest hair of his son. Soon, both of them find themselves engaging in gruelling session of fights.

John Hannah, too, came back and with the help of mystical warrior, Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), both of them provides considerable amount of help to Rick during his fights with Imhotep. But the most unexpected moment has arrived- Imhotep and Rick unite together for a fight against the all-powerful Scorpion King. Soon, their united power is too much for the Scorpion King and he falls prey to their swords. A dramatic plot always has its tragedy- Imhotep dies because his self-centred girlfriend, Anck Su Namun, refuses to help him.

A happy ending for the reunion of Rick and his family and having gone through all these treacherous experience, they are sure to enjoy life even more.

Portrayal of mummies: Here, there are incidents where "pygmy mummies" are found infesting the jungles. They are of below-average height but their strengths are tremendous, able to attack and kidnap even people twice or thrice their size. Of course, they are computer animated because the agility and speed of these creatures are too fast for an actor to catch up. Some of the actions are that of a monkey, for example, swinging from one tree to another and scampering along the forest floors.

These mummies depict more of the mummies of animals and not man and thus their actions and behaviour are very different from that of a man. Again, they are used as enemies of the main characters in this movie as they travel through the jungle. This portrayal of mummies here opens to a new question- what kinds of animals are mummified?

The answer can be found in their religion. Usually they mummified animals that they worshiped as gods, like cats, ibis and crocodiles. These animals were usually their pets. As you can see, mummification did not only apply to humans only.

Review by LCA critic:

Still as spellbinding as the first Movie, "The Mummy", the story plot is a bit better, because it is unexpected and quite logical. I like this movie, despite it is a sequel, because I have watched the original one before. If someone who has not watched "The Mummy" were to see the movie, I don't think he or she will enjoy this movie. Again, under the whim of director Stephen Sommers, the properly used computer animations are exhausting and sometimes will make people stun. I hope there will be a sequel to this as I wish to see what will happen to Rick and his family. I recommend to those who will like a show with lots of animations used.
